Craig Cohen, 47, died Wednesday in a hospice, six months after two men beat him and fractured his skull on the pavement near the Peter Pan Diner in Oakland Park.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you That Craig Cohen age 47, has died as a result of the brutal attack that occured on April 6, 2009. We believe it to be a hate crime, and that the perpetrators will be charged with murder.

I had an run in with Zak Spears today, I ran into him at the last place I would expect, Sunshine Cathedral, MCC church. Fort Lauderdale is a wonderful place for running into porn stars, I think it's where these hot men go to retire.
I am not sure if Zak Spears was visiting Fort Lauderdale or if he settled here I think he lives in California.
Zak is a beautiful man, with intense blue eyes. He was very friendly and grabbed my hand with his big mitts. He did not seem as large and muscular as I have seen him in print and in video but that was just fine with me.

As for Electra, she told USA Today that she loved our beautiful scenery and our beautiful bodies (and we love yours too, Carm!). I spent the afternoon on the patio of Georgie's Alibi. Since it opened in 1997, Alibi has been Wilton Manor's most popular bar and restaurant.

The first thing anyone notices is that no matter what time of day or night Alibi always packs a crowd. Sure, you can come for the typical nighttime bar scene, but a meal on the patio is always great fun. They are famous for their drink specials during the week. Thursdays are the famous Long Island night when you can get a huge long island ice tea served in a mason jar.

I have been coming to this popular gay video bar cafe for years but this time I noticed a newer selection in the starters page. Always willing to try something new and interesting I ordered the lamb sliders. The little ground lamb burgers were most tasty and a great way to begin a fun meal of videos and man watching . My partner opted for a sampler platter which included a variety of fried offerings that are typical of any bar side menu.

It's got to be a difficult task serving burgers just across the street from Rosie's where they do the burger thing so well. Georgie's holds it's own against any of the big juicy burgers I have had in the Fort Lauderdale Wilton Manors area.

The other salad and sandwich offering are typical for this type of venue, and worth exploring next time you visit. The service is always friendly and the prices are very reasonable.

I would recommend coming here for the eye candy and sticking around to enjoy the food. Georgie's Alibi offers happy hour specials most days and there is a party going on every night.

Pin-up Pinto plays it up
Local actor bares it all for art

His deeply dark-set eyes, thick Elvis Priestly hair, and defined muscles from here until the eye can see, assure that Stefan Pinto will command the spotlight in any room he gallivants into.

But despite his appearance, this actor—and occasional nude model—is really just a shy, comic book loving, computer geek trapped in a well-defined body.

South Florida audiences will get an eyeful of Pinto this weekend, when he stars in “Mr. Charles, currently of Palm Beach” by Paul Rudnick and “Mexico City” by David Leddick, two one-act plays premiering during the Independence Day weekend.

Leddick, a local author and playwright who is a mainstay in the South Florida scene (who also performs in both shows), said he wrote “Mexico City’ after reading a news story about a man who dressed in drag to gain access into elderly women’s houses and kill them.

“I thought, what would happen if this drag queen met an old lady she couldn’t handle,” Leddick said.

Pinto acknowledges an affinity for the play Leddick wrote.

“I liked performing in ‘Mexico City’ because its creative, the dialogue is proactive, its disguised as a comedy with very thought provoking moments about growing old,” Pinto said.

Ten years ago, Pinto said he was overweight, lived in New Jersey, worked as a web designer and frequently indulged in Pizza Hut Stuffed Crust Pizza, all the while wishing for something greater.

After a Whole Foods supermarket and a gym sprung up in his neighborhood, Pinto lost more than 60 lbs in what would be the beginning of his life-changing journey. After two years of working out and sticking to the Men’s Health Diet cookbook, a celebratory vacation to Miami to show off his new body led to a model scout discovering the unknown and raw talent.

Pinto appeared as the August 2007 centerfold in Playgirl magazine, has worked as a personal trainer at Equinox fitness in South Beach and currently writes a Fitness column for Examiner.com.

Now at age 39, Pinto has maintained his physique, as well as his down-to-earth sensibilities and quirky personality—he now hopes to go out and help others achieve their dreams.

“For a lot of people, fantasies remain fantasies because if it comes true, its no longer a fantasy,” Pinto said. “You need to learn to make a goal, make a plan, assign dates and reward yourself with milestones.”

This is Pinto’s second performance in one of the playwright Leddick’s productions.

Pinto previously performed in Rising Action Theater’s “Say You Love Satan,” and “Escorts” (also written by Leddick), and appeared on television in USA Network’s Burn Notice.

“Stefan is a lot like Cary Grant—he’s quite gentlemanly, he’s very sexy and he can deliver a funny line,” Leddick said. “Stefan is great looking on stage and people really like coming out to see him.”

Leddick said he hopes to perform these two plays again together in the future as part of festivals or a traveling show.

Merry Jo Cortada is a native Miamian (yes! they do exist!) and has worked as a dancer, singer, actress, and voiceover artist. Audiences this past season will remember her as Anita Bryant in the critically acclaimed production of Michael Yawney's “1000 Homosexuals”, and as the Queen of Broadway herself - Ethel Merman - in Rising Action Theatre's premiere of “The 11 O’clock Number”. Merry Jo is very proud to be a founding member and past President of The Women's Theatre Project.
Model and actor, Stefan Pinto once worked on Wall Street. He was discovered on the beaches of Miami and got his start modeling swimwear. He was the August 2007 Playgirl centerfold. Recently he performed at the Rising Action Theater in "Say You Love Satan" and "Escorts".
David Kingery, Miami’s in-demand director, is directing the show. This is his fourth collaboration with Mr. Leddick, having directed “Escorts”, “Quentin and I” and "Presenting Gilda Lilly." He is currently Artistic Director for Arts at St. Johns on Miami Beach and has been performing and directing in musical theater professionally in New York, Los Angeles and Miami for the past 14 years. He also was the founding Artistic Director for the South Beach Gay Men's Chorus.
Jamie Cooper has been actively working as a production manager in South Florida for over fifteen years and served as technical director for numerous musicals and corporate events including include “La Cage Aux Folles”, “Zero Hour”, “The Life”, “Perfect Harmony”, “Jim Bailey as Barbra Streisand”, “The Kid From Brooklyn” and “Groucho” starring Gabe Kaplan.
Composer Andrew Sargent has also written the music for “Escorts”, “The Secrets of the Chorus”, a backstage-backstabbing musical romp, and “It’s a Fabulous Life.” His scores are featured in the mini-musical about Quentin Crisp titled “Quentin and I” and the starry-eyed Hollywood fable “Presenting Gilda Lilly”. Sargent studied music at the University of Montevallo, Alabama.
V. J. Colonna is the manager for Mr. Leddick and Mr. Sargent. His production company, V. J. Colonna Productions, Inc., produced “Escorts”, “Presenting Gilda Lilly”, “Quentin and I”, “The Secrets of the Chorus” and Mr. Leddick’s cabarets: “David Leddick at the Deauville”, “The Littlest Review”, and “Let’s Fall In Love”. If you just wander around the gay hot spots, the Publix, the movie theaters and Bally's, You can't help but notice some very familiar faces of porn. Some of the fantasy men are here working or on vacation but we have several well known porn stars that call Fort Lauderdale home.

Matt Rush has called Fort Lauderdale home for several years, I first saw him on the patio of Georgie's Alibi and yet everyone was going about their business without making a big deal, since seeing Matt Rush is a common occurrence in the Wilton Drive gayborhood.

All you have to do is visit Rosie's, Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manor's most popular hamburger joint to run into that hunky B&D expert Nick Moretti.

Damien Crosse used to live here then he moved to New York and now he is in Spain.

I have never seen Mitch Colby except for on MySpace, and in his movies, but if I did I would remember!

With the perfect weather, more options in the social scene and plenty of night life it is no wonder these men who could live anywhere choose living right here in greater Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors.

United Way conducts online census of South Florida’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender communities

United Way of Broward has launched an Internet census to glean detailed information about South Florida's large gay community.

Among the very personal questions asked:

• What sex were you born (and what is your current gender)?

• How many sex partners have you had this year? (And did you practice safe sex?)

• Have you ever suffered physical or mental abuse because of your sexual orientation or gender identity?

The $10,000 nonscientific survey -- funded by the Florida Department of Health -- contains 67 questions ranging from basic demographics to health and community issues, said Dave Wallace, United Way senior development manager and co-chair of the agency's Broward County LGBT Task Group.

The survey, called The Count, is geared to South Florida's ''lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning community,'' according to a United Way of Broward website.

''We want to get a clear picture of what we look like in the community [and] with that, to build awareness for the issues in the community,'' Wallace said. ``With the hard data we get from this, that will help get funding for programs. Without that data it's hard to justify getting funding dollars to South Florida.''

The U.S. Census asks few gay-oriented questions. In 2000, Americans were asked for the first time if they lived with domestic partners. Recently, the Obama administration instructed Census officials in 2010 to count same-sex couples married in states where it's legal.

The Broward survey, patterned after a similar census by United Way of Central Ohio, seeks to reach many more people than just those who are partnered.

It's not easy finding everyone, Wallace said.

'You don't know who they are. You can't call 300 registered voters and say, `Are you gay? We'd like to ask you a few questions about that,' '' he said. ``A lot of people in the LGBT community are hidden. They don't all go to the bars.''

The survey, which began June 21 and takes about 15 minutes to complete, will remain online through September at www.lgbtcensus.com. Wallace encouraged all gay people living from Miami-Dade to Palm Beach counties to take it.

Wallace says the survey is completely anonymous. ''The only specific information we're going to get out of a person is their Zip code,'' he said.

The survey is co-sponsored by several groups and agencies including the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of South Florida, Broward Health Department, SunServe and Broward House.

''It will give us information to better tailor our programs to help people in the community,'' said Terry DeCarlo of Broward House, the county's oldest and largest AIDS service organization.

DeCarlo said it's important for his agency to know exactly what gay residents' sexual practices are, whether they have safe sex and whether they've been tested recently for HIV.

''People have to answer honestly. That's a very important part,'' said DeCarlo, who also assures that no one taking the survey will be identified by their Internet addresses.

''The police are not going to come knocking at your door,'' DeCarlo said.

Purgatory Nightclub owner charged with arson

FORT LAUDERDALE - A Fort Lauderdale nightclub owner was charged with arson after being accused of setting his car on fire outside of his business.

The fire outside of club Purgatory at 1000 State Road 84, took place Sunday morning, police said.

Preliminary police reports say that a witness driving by the business at around 8:30 a.m. noticed a man shutting a door to a silver Cadillac, which then burst into flames.

The man, who police said was later identified as Anthony Sannizzaro Jr., of Davie, was then seen running into the club.

Sannizzaro, 60, who owns the club, had minor burns on his right arm and his shirt, police said.

A phone message left for Sannizzaro at a Davie address was not returned.

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to contact Detective Scott Neily at 954-828-5506 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.

According to FBI statistics, the greatest growth in hate crimes in recent years is against Asian Americans and the gay and lesbian community. Law enforcement officials acknowledge that hate crimes — similar to rape and family violence crimes — go under-reported, with many victims reluctant to go to the police, and some police agencies not fully trained in recognizing or investigating hate crimes.

Broward County has the highest rate of hate crimes in the state of Florida. Is anyone else a fan of Queer As Folk's Liberty Diner? Well here in Wilton Manors we have something quite similar, our own Courtyard Cafe.
I have had the opportunity to dine there several times for Breakfast, Lunch and a late night Dinner. I love that they are open late so all you patrons of Alibi and Bill's can stroll, not drive, over for your post bar hopping munchies.
I have one big criticism about the ventilation system, it smells like smoke. It hits you when you walk in the door and I think it's because The Cafe shares space with the popular Bill's Filling Station. They have a great outdoor space anyway (hence the name "Courtyard") You do get used to it after a few minutes, and after being in smoked filled bars all night one should hardly complain.
The food here is mostly standard diner fare, with interesting specials on a board, but all too adventurous for for me to try. I have kept it simple with a great cheeseburger, eggs, pancakes and once I shared a plate of fried green tomatoes only $2.95 for a half portion. Yep, this is the south (sometimes). I was surprised to see on the menu deep fried Twinkies. The Courtyard is the only place I know that has such decadence. I am dying to ask the staff if any of the buffed and polished boys and men I see frequenting the area businesses actually order them. Maybe they order their's in a brown paper bag, to go?

Courtyard is another place in the heart of Gay Wilton Manors that I frequent and recommend. Check them out.

What is going on the Drive in Wilton Manors?

It looks like construction has begun on The Manors, which is supposed to be a multi-floor complex on Wilton Drive in the same building that formerly housed Food Amongst The Flowers. The current plan for The Manors is to expand the building into a 16,000 square foot, two-level complex with a full service restaurant and a lounge. Behind the plan is Paul Hugo former owner of the Coliseum nightclub in Fort Lauderdale. He said he will be ready to divulge full plans and details of The Manors in a few weeks.

It's a fun way to spend the evening if you are by yourself, with friends or on a date. Most of the crowd was amused watching reruns of Family Guy and a few were enjoying the free WiFi.The newer Starbucks in Wilton Manors doesn't seem to have diminished the popularity of Java Boys.
I am a coffee purist so I did not try any of their more adventurous offerings, all of their baked goods are highly recomended, including a summer special of brownie and icecream , Yum.
They have a MySpace page but I am unable to locate a website for them, but I highly recomend you check them out in person!

We just want to set the record straight, direct from the source! As you may have heard, the Cubby Hole has been sold, and it's also been reported in a local rag. And yet, we are hearing the wildest rumors, including "they're tearing it down". Here is a direct letter from the current owners, John Hitchcock and Jay Jones:

It is with very mixed feelings that I make the following announcement. After 14 years of owning and managing The Cubby Hole, its time for a change. That being said, The Cubby Hole has been sold, the new owners will take possession after the closing which is set to take place sometime around June 30th.

According to the new owners to be, they plan on continuing the business exactly as it has been run including the current staff and specials. John will be staying on for several weeks to help the transition to the new owners

After over 30 years of bar ownership and 40 in the biz its time to slow down a bit. This past winter a fight with cancer made me realize it was time to enjoy life a bit more. ( For those who did not know that, I beat the cancer)

I made this announcement as early as possible for my employees benefit and so that Fort Lauderdale's rumor mill will have the correct, not distorted information.

I wish to thank all of the people throughout the years that have made The Cubby Hole the Successful neighborhood bar it is and hope we will continue to have your loyal patronage. The new owners are very nice and are eager to be welcomed to our community. They are by the way from Las Vegas, NV and have previously owned several gay clubs out there including a Bear Bar.

So there ya have it, the Cubby Hole is NOT going anywhere! I have met the new owner, been in their previous bar in Vegas numerous times, and they are VERY COOL! Everything is going to be the same.

I was going to work this morning, and I stopped, as I often do, to get a newspaper and a citrus green tea. I encountered a line of about 5 people waiting to check out. It gave me the opportunity to check out a smokin hot Pepsi delivery man. So I was thinking of a great new blog feature where I would snap a picture with my Blackberry of random hot guys I encounter in my travels around Fort Lauderdale.

I am not sure if I have the nerve to approach these guys and ask if I can take their picture for my blog, but it sure could be an ice breaker.

On Thursday, July 9, at 6:00 p.m., the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Nova Southeastern University and the 2009 NPC Southern States Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Bodybuilding Championships will unite to present “The Muscular Body as Living Art.”
The special event will be held at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s Horvitz Auditorium and outdoor Sculpture Terrace in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
This summer’s event is inspired by the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 1976 live exhibition, “The Body as Art,” which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, Frank Zane, and Ed Corney.
Ellie Rodriguez, the entertainment reporter for Deco Drive, will host “The Muscular Body as Living Art” – a fun, live exhibition featuring NPC Bodybuilding Champions with commentary by noted faculty from Nova Southeastern University. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and GLAAD’s National Board of Directors today announced that Jarrett T. Barrios, a former State Senator from Massachusetts who now heads a leading health care foundation, will serve as GLAAD’s new President. GLAAD works to achieve full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans through media advocacy and anti-LGBT defamation work.

I watched him give an interview on Youtube, this guy is hot, inside and out.

What was once the monthly meeting place for the Foot Fetish and Florida Bondage Clubs has shut its doors for good, relocating its popular T-dances to the middle of Wilton Drive.Jackhammer, the club that had operated in the old Steele nightclub building at 1951 NW 9th Ave., held its last big events over Memorial Day weekend, and unceremoniously closed at the end of May, mainly due to an increase in rent, according to co-owner Russ Johannsen.“We didn’t let anyone know what was going on,” Johannsen said. “There are a few places in the Wilton community that are doing well, but the owners are supporting those places (with their own money) in hopes the economy will bounce back. We chose to close.”On June 7, Johannsen and his former Jackhammer co-owner Chris Burdekin began offering “Jackhammer in Exile,” a Sunday T-dance at Boom, 2232 Wilton Drive, so their customers would still have a place to go.The “Levi’s and leather bar” originally opened eight years ago on Andrews Ave., before moving into its now former home in February 2007. They are known for hosting “Hardcore Leather” nights for GLBT charities, with more than $300,000 raised, according to Johannsen.Johannsen said the landlords on their property wanted to raise the rent charge from $13,500 per month to $15,000 per month. Coupled with a decline in patrons, and bartenders who left after losing their day jobs, the club owners felt they had no other choice.“What made my mind final was there was no boom from tourist season this year,” Johannsen said. “Yes there were tourists that came in, but they just made up for the locals that had left the state because they couldn’t find work or couldn’t afford to live here anymore.”He added: “We’ve been on a spiral since 2007. But we will return. I am going to wait until this nightmare of an economy passes.”Lorenzo, a.k.a “Pup”—no last name provided—has attended parties at Jackhammer since its inception and is very sad to see his favorite place shut its doors.“You could always count on a real T-dance there, they always had a beautiful dance floor where people who go to dance would have a place,” said Pup. “Chris and Russ are fabulous and always treated everyone well.”Pup, an employee of LeatherWerks, said the Leather Masked Balls and Christmas parties are some of his favorite memories.Boom has hired about 90 percent of Jackhammer’s remaining staff and also brought over DJ Marc Scott for the Sunday festivities.Boom owner Craig Attebury said he is excited for the good times and the patrons that Sunday T-Dances will bring.“It’s a big crowd, it’s a fun crowd, they like to party, we like to party, the crowd is more of a man’s crowd and I like that kind of a crowd,” Attebury said. “I think our regulars will love it.”Some in the community would be surprised to see one gay bar reaching out to its former competition but Attebury, who has owned Boom for nine years, said he had no problem bringing Johannsen and Burdekin into his establishment because he believes that the rivalry between Fort Lauderdale bars is very contrived.“I see the opposite, I have never been in a rivalry with anybody,” Attebury said. “It’s an urban myth. I don’t see it and it hasn’t happened to me.”Pup said he will miss the actual Jackhammer building, but is willing to go to Boom for the “In Exile” experience.“More than likely I will venture over there, when you gotta dance on Sunday, you gotta go there,” Pup said.Johannsen said his old club provided ample parking and was the first in the gay community to hire off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officers for patron’s protection.“Chris and I had a very down-to-earth, drama-free everyone-is-welcome type of attitude where we could play porn on the TV’s and that’s what the customers are going to miss the most,” Johannsen said.”
